Terms of Service
Last updated: July 7, 2026
These terms govern your use of Mordent, the weekly murder-mystery game at
playmordent.com. By playing, you agree to them. The short version: play fair,
your case key is your responsibility, subscriptions are easy to cancel, and the
mysteries are fiction.
1. The service
Mordent is a browser game: each week a new mystery case opens, and you
investigate by interrogating AI-driven characters, gathering evidence, and naming
a culprit. Cases, characters, and dialogue are fiction, generated in part by
AI. Any resemblance to real people or events is coincidental. AI-generated
dialogue is part of the game world and is not factual information or advice.
2. Your account & case key
- Accounts are anonymous: your credential is a randomly generated case key.
Anyone holding your key can access your account, so treat it like a password.
- We cannot recover a lost key unless you added a recovery email. If you
lose your key and have no recovery email, the account (including any Mordent+
time on it) cannot be recovered. Members: add one.
- You may not buy, sell, or transfer accounts, and one person shouldn't operate
a fleet of accounts to manipulate leaderboards or referral rewards.
3. Fair play
The leaderboards are the heart of the game, so we protect them. You agree not to:
- automate play (bots, scripts, headless browsers) or use exploits;
- attempt to extract the solution from the system rather than deduce it,
including prompt-injection attacks against the AI characters;
- abuse referral or reward mechanics (self-referral, fake accounts);
- probe, overload, or disrupt the service, or attempt to access other players'
data or accounts;
- submit content into the game that is unlawful or designed to harm others.
We may reset scores, remove leaderboard entries, or suspend/terminate accounts
involved in cheating or abuse. We try to be proportionate: honest mistakes get a
conversation; industrialized cheating gets a locked door.
4. Mordent+ subscriptions & purchases
- Billing. Mordent+ is a recurring subscription billed through Stripe. It
renews automatically each period until you cancel.
- Cancelling. Cancel anytime via the in-game Store → Manage membership
(Stripe's customer portal). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current
billing period; you keep your benefits until then.
- One-time items. Store items like hint tokens are consumable virtual
goods with no cash value, usable only inside the game.
- Changes. We may change subscription pricing or benefits with advance
notice; changes apply from your next renewal, never retroactively.
5. Refunds
- Subscriptions: if you're unhappy, email
support@playmordent.com within
14 days of any subscription charge and we'll refund that charge in full.
After 14 days, charges are non-refundable, but cancelling stops all future ones.
- Consumable items (e.g., hint tokens): refundable within 14 days if
unused; once spent in-game they're non-refundable.
- Refunds go back to the original payment method via Stripe and typically
arrive within 5 to 10 business days.
- We may decline refunds that show a pattern of abuse (e.g., repeated
subscribe-play-refund cycles).
6. Your content, our content
- You own the text you type. You grant us a license to process, store, and
display it as needed to run the game (including sending it to our AI provider to
generate responses, and showing your notes back to you).
- The game and everything in it (cases, characters, writing, artwork, brand,
and code) is ours or our licensors'. Don't copy or redistribute it outside normal sharing (your
results, screenshots, streams, and videos of your own play are welcome and
encouraged).
7. Availability & changes to the game
Mordent is a living game: cases rotate weekly, features evolve, and balance
changes (par, scoring, powers) happen. We aim for high availability but don't
guarantee uninterrupted service, and we may modify or discontinue features. If we
ever shut the service down entirely, we'll give active subscribers reasonable
notice and refund any unused subscription time.
8. Disclaimers & liability
The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or
implied. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim
related to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months
before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be
limited.
9. Termination
You can stop playing at any time, and delete your account (see the
Privacy Policy). We may suspend or terminate
accounts that violate these terms; if we terminate a Mordent+ account
without cause, we'll refund the unused portion of the current period.
10. Governing law & disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to
conflict-of-law rules. Before any formal dispute, please contact us. Nearly
everything can be fixed with an email.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms; the date above always reflects the current version.
For material changes we'll give notice in-game. Continued play after a change
means acceptance.
