Terms of Service

Last updated: July 7, 2026

These terms govern your use of Mordent, the weekly murder-mystery game at playmordent.com. By playing, you agree to them. The short version: play fair, your case key is your responsibility, subscriptions are easy to cancel, and the mysteries are fiction.

1. The service

Mordent is a browser game: each week a new mystery case opens, and you investigate by interrogating AI-driven characters, gathering evidence, and naming a culprit. Cases, characters, and dialogue are fiction, generated in part by AI. Any resemblance to real people or events is coincidental. AI-generated dialogue is part of the game world and is not factual information or advice.

2. Your account & case key

3. Fair play

The leaderboards are the heart of the game, so we protect them. You agree not to:

We may reset scores, remove leaderboard entries, or suspend/terminate accounts involved in cheating or abuse. We try to be proportionate: honest mistakes get a conversation; industrialized cheating gets a locked door.

4. Mordent+ subscriptions & purchases

5. Refunds

6. Your content, our content

7. Availability & changes to the game

Mordent is a living game: cases rotate weekly, features evolve, and balance changes (par, scoring, powers) happen. We aim for high availability but don't guarantee uninterrupted service, and we may modify or discontinue features. If we ever shut the service down entirely, we'll give active subscribers reasonable notice and refund any unused subscription time.

8. Disclaimers & liability

The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim related to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

9. Termination

You can stop playing at any time, and delete your account (see the Privacy Policy). We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms; if we terminate a Mordent+ account without cause, we'll refund the unused portion of the current period.

10. Governing law & disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Before any formal dispute, please contact us. Nearly everything can be fixed with an email.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms; the date above always reflects the current version. For material changes we'll give notice in-game. Continued play after a change means acceptance.
